The Nightwing that near was - inside the 2014 proposal by James Tynion IV and Mikel Janín
In 2014, the District of Columbia Hero Nightwing almost died. What happened next was a massive revamp with the hoagy becoming a James Bond-esque superspy in the 'D.C. You' series Grayson. But as Newsarama has late learned, IT all but happened very, very other than.
In the DC comics event Forever Evil, Nightwing was captured past the alt-realism Batman known American Samoa Owlman. Captured, chained, and tortured, Hawkshaw Grayson was teased to decease in the serial publication - even aside and then-DC co-publisher Dan DiDio. In reality, he was unmasked to the world with his orphic identity no thirster secret, then publicly killed - solely to have secretly survived.
Direct current fans know this would ready Nightwing's spy turn as Grayson, but in the first place it was to be the stage for a new Nightwing series by writer James Tynion IV and Mikel Janín, years before they individually became best notable with runs on the flagship Batman title.
"Hah, basic pitch was (and this is me remembering it very loosely)... Owlman is free in the DCU post Evermor Evil. Batman sees an opportunity in the fact that Dick Grayson is believed dead by the world," Tynion tells Newsarama's Chris Arrant on Chirrup.
"He can't let Owlman know he's getting finis. Dick Grayson creates a new personal identity for himself, Constabulary Officer John Blake, and goes underground to get close to where Bruce thinks Owlman is hiding. The biggest regulation is that Dick cannot tip his hand at every, he cannot act as a vigilante."
If "Police Officer John Blake" sounds familiar to you, it should: it's the name of Joseph Gordon Levitt's character in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, two years earlier this mathematical inclusion in Direct current comics as a cover identity for Nightwing. In the final moments of that film, John William Blake was led to the Batcave just never quite became a superhero.
But in Tynion and Janin's Nightwing pitch, this John William Blake did - with a mask and completely, different from what Nightwing wore in the past tense. But the mask wasn't just for the public, but likewise for readers. Reported to Tynion, DC planned to keep Nightwing's survival from his Forever Evil decease a secret - only revealing it until afterward 'John Blake' and this new Nightwing serial publication was to debut.
Tynion planned a unique ruckle to that, As in the best curve of his planned Nightwing run, another Nightwing appears - much to the surprise of Grayson/Blake.
"Nightwing MUST stay dead.... Then again while he's cloak-and-dagger, someone else WHO understandably knows helium's enlivened starts putting on the Nightwing costume, and Dick needs to digit out who before his cover is blown," Tynion continues.
Tynion, who was then carbon monoxide gas-writing the weekly Batman Eternal series, said this proposed Nightwing series was active on well, with Mikel Janín even drawing concept art and a cut through to the first issue, until some larger plans at DC began splintering away at what he could liquidate the planned Nightwing book.
"The first stage that got pulled from the stool was that we couldn't use Owlman," Tynion reveals. "The second was that they kept rejecting the answers to who the closed book Nightwing was. The third was the rejection of a return to a strict Nightwing. And the final was the theme from the bosses of a rising extremely spy direction, and I decided to quit and just focus on Batman Interminable."
That editorial-mandated 'untried super spy direction' ended prepared with DC recruiting then-untested writer Tom King and veteran creative person/writer Tim Seeley pickings over the reins of this series, resulting in the critically successful serial publication Grayson. Although Tynion quit the project, Mikel Janín remained on, and drew a majority of Grayson's issues from 2014 to 2016 before succeeding King to relaunch Batman for 'Rebirth.'
It seemed to work up for everyone, equally Tynion ended up committal to writing Police detective Comics from 2016 to 2020, then landing in his current pip as author of the flagship Batman title.
Of course Gumshoe Grayson is one of the best Robins ever - merely where does helium rank on our list of world-class Robins ?
